User tips for brushcutters
Before using a trimmer or brushcutter, make sure you
are familiar with the manual, and are confident in completing the
particular garden job. For safety, also remember that any rotating
cutting tools can throw objects or cut the operator. Trimmers and
brushcutters can be equally as dangerous.
A/ Hold the trimmer or brushcutter firmly with both hands.
B/ Make sure you read through, understand, and adhere to brushcutter instructions in the manufacturer's operating manual.
C/ Before use be sure that the throttle lever springs back to idle position.
D/ Replace bent, warped, damaged or dull cutting apparatus.
E/ Check that the blades or cord coil is adjusted properly and is tight.
F/ Select a brushcutter with anti-vibration components. If you are using this for jobs in the larger home garden, you will be thankful you chose the right brushcutter.
The correct clothing for brushcutter use
A/ Sturdy and well-fitting overalls, jeans or long pants.
B/ You can quite easily obtain heavy-duty, non-slip gloves.
C/ Safety boots with non-slip soles,
D/ Brushcutter safety goggles, or face screen and safety glasses. If you are using these items for large jobs hearing protection (muffs or plugs) could also be useful for brushcutter use.
Checklist for using grass trimmers and brushcutters
A/ Keep people (especially children) away from starting and brushcutter operating areas.
B/ Check area for stones, glass, metal and debris. Clear before brushcutter use.
C/ Unless you adjust the harness to suit the working position it will become uncomfortable very quickly.
D/ Refuel the brushcutter engine before starting work. The engine needs to be cool to do this. If refuelling is required before the job is completed, make sure you wait for the engine to cool. Fuel will often splash on to the hot engine.
E/ Replace or tighten all loose or damaged parts or guards. This is particularly important for high powered brushcutters which can take metal blades.
F/ If using an electric grass trimmer, know where the cable is at all times. F/ Start the brushcutter or trimmer on firm ground or other solid surfaces in an open area.
G/ Use a brushcutter at ground level only.
H/ Shut off brushcutter engine before cleaning out clogged or stuck cutter.
I/ Stop the engine before putting the brushcutter or trimmer down.
J/ Disconnect the spark plug when the brushcutter is left unattended.
K/ Secure cutter to prevent fuel spillage and damage during transport.
Final pointers for brushcutter and trimmer use.
A/ Do not leave the brushcutter running tool unattended.
B/ Do not wear short trousers or short sleeves whilst operating a brushcutter.
C/ Do not use the brushcutters metal blades in stony areas.
D/ Do not overreach. Ensure proper footing and balance at all times.
E/ Do not repair damaged attachments - discard them.
