Livestock Gardens
Although not as demanding as general livestock, keeping birds of any kind requires dedicated care. Many people with limited space in their gardens opt for keeping birds.
The brief guide below will give you some helpful pointers if you are planning to keep birds. You should seek additional professional advice in your local area before purchasing any birds though.
Keeping Birds - Hygiene
Cages should be cleaned out daily. A complete clean out should be done on a weekly basis if possible. Cleaning the cage floor and food bowls on a daily basis help to prevent problems with food spoilage and alerts the owner to any potential signs of illness.
Cage Liners, such as, newspapers or paper towels will help with the everyday cleaning routine. These should be place on a level above the absolute base of the cage floor, which should be a depth of wood chips, cat litter, or sand, which will act as a cage substrate and help to take away the build up of odours. Substrate should ideally be below a wire barrier so the bird does not have direct access.
