Livestock Gardens
Keeping any form of livestock requires careful consideration. You must ensure that your garden or plot of land will adequately meet the needs of the animals you are planning to keep.
There are many choices, some of the more usual are chickens, hens, goats, and rabbits. The following brief guides are design to help get an understanding of the basic upkeep and care requirements for your livestock gardening plans.
You should also seek professional advice from suppliers in your local area, they will be able to help you with any specific questions that you may have.
Keeping Geese - Enclosure Space
IAround one acre of grass will support 10-15 large geese or about 20 light to medium breed geese.
If you have a medium to large-sized garden a pair or trio of geese is sufficient.
Generally geese will graze happily wandering around the garden or enclosure, but you need to make sure that they can not get themselves into difficulties by wandering too far. Therefore you should ensure that adequate preparation has been made, prior to purchasing your geese. A suitably fenced off area will ensure that the geese can wander but will remain within defined boundaries.
It is a good policy to spread some lime on the grassland where the geese are hoping to graze. The lime will sweeten the soil and may help to reduce parasitic worms that could be harmful to the geese.
New geese should be wormed on arrival, and then twice a year thereafter to keep the birds fit and healthy. Consult your local vet or feed suppliers for information about worming, and general care requirements.
