Livestock Gardens

Although not as demanding as general livestock, keeping birds of any kind requires dedicated care. Many people with limited space in their gardens opt for keeping birds.

The brief guide below will give you some helpful pointers if you are planning to keep birds. You should seek additional professional advice in your local area before purchasing any birds though.

Keeping Birds - General Bird Care

Usually a healthy, well-fed pet bird will require only minor care in the form of a condition check up. If you notice the birds plumage is tatty or the bird is off it's food, then this can be a sign of a problem. You should always seek professional advice if your bird appears to be ill.

Indoor pet birds that resist a varied diet require more attention in the care of the beak, nails, feet and feathers.

Most birds have a time of year where they will moult some of their feathers. Additional fat, protein and vitamins may be required in their diet to ensure continued good general health. As a new feather develops, the bird may pick at the pin feather cover to open it. This should not be interpreted as "feather picking" or the presence of mites. Pure water is the most appropriate feather spray.

Keep feathers dry and free of oily substances. Soiled feathers may be gently cleaned with a mild detergent solution (e.g., baby shampoo) followed by thorough warm water rinsing and drying.

Wing clipping may be desired to prevent escape or injury, or for taming and training. Seek professional advice from you local veterinarian if your bird requires wing clipping.

A regular visit to an avian veterinarian for a routine health examination is advised in order to detect potential problems early.
