Livestock Gardens
Keeping any form of livestock requires careful consideration. You must ensure that your garden or plot of land will adequately meet the needs of the animals you are planning to keep.
There are many choices, some of the more usual are chickens, hens, goats, and rabbits. The following brief guides are design to help get an understanding of the basic upkeep and care requirements for your livestock gardening plans.
You should also seek professional advice from suppliers in your local area, they will be able to help you with any specific questions that you may have.
Keeping Rabbits - General Care
A Rabbit makes a great pet, but you should remember that it will be part of the family for anything up to 15 years. Therefore it is essential that you know how to take proper care of your rabbit.
Where to buy your Rabbit from :
It is well worth considering adopting a rabbit from a shelter or rescue if you have one nearby. There will be many rabbits and other animals looking for new homes. Do not worry about getting an older rabbit, as they will settle into their new home just as readily as a younger rabbit.
Private breeders, make sure the breeder takes good care of the animals. Do not buy from any breeders that appear to have messy or run-down premises, where the animals are cramped into cages.
Pet shops are the obvious choice, although you should be careful about the health and condition, as well as socialization, of any of the animals you decide to purchase.
Quick Comments.
Pet Qualities (pros and cons):
Rabbits need a great deal of interaction with their owners and/or other rabbits to be happy.
They do need to chew, so lots of chewable toys should be provided.
Any area where the rabbit is allowed to run must be carefully rabbit-proofed, to prevent escape.
They need a relatively large cage.
Change their litter box frequently.
Rabbits may require some veterinary care, which can be expensive.
They should be spayed or neutered (by a vet experienced with surgery on rabbits).
They may require vaccinations depending on where you live.
