Livestock Gardens

Keeping any form of livestock requires careful consideration. You must ensure that your garden or plot of land will adequately meet the needs of the animals you are planning to keep.

There are many choices, some of the more usual are chickens, hens, goats, and rabbits. The following brief guides are design to help get an understanding of the basic upkeep and care requirements for your livestock gardening plans.

You should also seek professional advice from suppliers in your local area, they will be able to help you with any specific questions that you may have.

General Requirements - Type of land

Different livestock are best suited to certain types of terrain.

A small garden is not going to be suitable for any large grazing animals. Assuming you have a fair size piece of land available, you should inspect it to see what animals will be best suited to it.

A quick guide to some animals to land types:

Sheep should not be kept on constantly boggy marshy ground or they will develop foot problems.

Horses should not be kept on flinty stony soil, or steep sided hills.

Goats will eat almost anything, and you need to be sure that there is nothing that will harm them on the land.

Pigs are very adaptable, you should fence off a suitable area for them live in.

Poultry will live on almost any type of land, it is a good idea to plan their range.
