Water feature – lightingWhile water is an attractive feature by day, by night it can become positively mysterious through the use of effective lighting. Surface lighting – each plant and structure illuminated at night will be not only more visible in itself, but reflected perfectly in the dark water of an unlit pond. In most cases, for this to work well, the light source shouldn’t be visible. This means hiding the light behind rocks or shrubs or in special enclosures, or setting them up in trees so that they shine down like spotlights. The exception, is surface lighting provided by candles or lanterns, which rather than illuminating, add a rich, varying ambient light to the area and these can be on full display as they do not detract from the features you wish to light. Underwater lighting – this should also be concealed so that only its light, not its source, is visible. Lights tucked under rocks and ledges, or built into the sides of concrete ponds, are very effective. If you have a fountain, a light placed just beneath the surface of the water so that it shines upwards, following the path of the falling water, is ideal. It’s worth remembering that underwater lights don’t just illuminate the thing you’re focusing on, but every fish, lump of rock, bunch of roots and decaying leaf that happens to be in their path. They also get obscured by films of algae and mud, so they may need cleaning fairly often, which is relatively easily done with a clean mop pushed down and rubbed over the surface of the light.
