Environment: Rich and clay soilds, tolerant of shade

As timber it's extremely tough and in the past has found itself used as butchers chopping boards and wheels. Green catkins from spring through to the autumn, turning to winged fruit in the autumn providing food for wildlife. Often used in hedging.
